My USDOT number was deactivated
This is almost always fixable, and the fix is a form the government gives away free. It is also the most common reason a DOT number gets shut off in the first place.
Do not call anybody yet. File a complete, current MCS-150. That is what puts the number back in service, and FMCSA charges nothing for it.
Why it happens
Every USDOT number has to be updated every two years. That is the biennial MCS-150 update. If it does not get done, FMCSA can deactivate the number. There is no notice and no hearing. The deactivation happens off the date, not off a conversation.
A change to your name, your address or the details on your record also requires an update, so a move can put you out of step before the two years are even up.
What it costs you while it sits
- You are not registered to operate. A deactivated number is not a warning. It is the registration being switched off.
- There can be a penalty on top. FMCSA's own FAQ states that failing to complete the biennial updates can bring civil penalties of up to $1,000 per day, with a maximum penalty of $10,000.
- Your operating authority can follow it down. Reinstating an MC number requires an active USDOT number, and FMCSA's system will not accept a reinstatement request while the USDOT number is inactive or out of service.
How to fix it, in order
- File the MCS-150. It is free. FMCSA charges nothing for the form and nothing for the update. For a reactivation, use the version that applies to your company: the MCS-150, the MCS-150B or the MCS-150C.
- Use the current version of the form. FMCSA does not accept expired versions of the MCS-150 series. Download it from fmcsa.dot.gov, or file it through MOTUS, which is FMCSA's registration system at motus.dot.gov.
- Then deal with the operating authority, if it needs it. That is a separate request, and FMCSA charges $80 for it. Authority is usually active within a week of the request and the payment being received. This step only works once the USDOT number is active again, so it comes second.
- If the number went inactive after a new entrant revocation, stop and read that notice first. FMCSA has separate instructions for that path, and it is not the same process.
The overcharge worth knowing about
FMCSA charges $0 to file an MCS-150. Third-party filers publish $150 for a standard filing and $350 for a "lifetime" update of the same form. Both of those things are true at the same time. The free one is on FMCSA's own site.

That last part is the whole reason this service exists. We keep the MCS-150 date on a written checklist, chase it before it comes due, and file the update for you. If the number has already been deactivated, the filing and the reinstatement paperwork get prepared either way.
